Signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease’s rate of progression and characters of symptoms vary from one individual to another. Many studies have suggested that gender affects the length and the rate of survival. At first the syndrome begins with the insidious onset of memory loss. In this stage patients may have difficulties recalling recent events, the names of familiar people or things. Usually the first signs of its onset are noticed by the members of patient’s family or social network. As the disease goes on symptoms are more easily noticed and the diagnosis is established only after the clinical symptoms become significant enough to interfere with the patient’s social functioning.
In advanced stages of illness patients are severely confused, bedridden, and unable to feed themselves. In addition to their cognitive impairments, most of them develop behavioral disturbances such as paranoia, aggression, aphaty, repetitive behaviours, and declining personal hygiene. They tend to be sensitive to some illnesses like infections, pneumonia etc.
